7 Tips For Training Smarter

Are you getting the most out of your workouts and your time? If you’re not seeing the results you want, these tips could help you train more efficiently.

1) WARM UP

Warming up properly helps prevent injuries, activate the muscles and improves your mind muscle connection. Use the warm up to mentally prepare for the workout you’re about to do. Try a dynamic warm up next time you’re at the gym.

2) FOCUS

Perform every rep with purpose and really feel it. Focus on the muscle that you are working. The mirrors at the gym are not just for selfies – use them to look at the muscles you are targeting with the exercise. Make sure you’re not just going through the motions.

3) BREATHING

Are you breathing correctly? Inhale on the eccentric and exhale on the concentric movement.

4) CORE STABILITY

Have a routine for how you set up for each exercise and brace/ keep your core tight. This will help ensure good form and you’ll be able to lift more weight as well as working your abs with every exercise.

5) REST TIME

Depending on your program you might have 45, 60 or 90+ seconds between sets. Set the timer on your phone or use a stopwatch to ensure you get just the right amount of rest between sets.

6) INTENSITY

Keep your intensity up by minimizing distractions & rest time between sets. This is obvious but I thought I’d include it anyway: avoid chatting/ texting/being on your phone. If you do have your phone on you while working out, i.e. to time the rest between sets or listen to music, you could switch on airplane mode to avoid distractions. When you see someone you know, save the small talk for after you finish your training.

7) PERSONAL TRAINER

Hiring a personal trainer is the way to go if you want fast results and need someone to push you further. A personal trainer will provide personalized instruction, motivation and accountability.
